Beat is on as Ringo Starr and Beach Boy Brian collect Mojos

A BEATLE and a Beach Boy were both honoured at a top music awards last night.

Ringo Starr picked up the icon award at music magazine Mojo's annual awards, while Brian Wilson was inducted into its Hall of Fame.

Editor-in-chief Phil Alexander said: "Ringo was the backbeat of one of the greatest bands of all-time. He's the man who sang With A Little Help From My Friends. He's the only guy to ever visit the Octopus's Garden. The man who directed T Rex's Born to Boogie. Oh, and he's the voice of Thomas The Tank Engine. Teddy boy, mop top, all-star guy. There is and only ever will be one Ringo Starr."

Wilson, who flew in from the United States to collect his award, was the leader of the Beach Boys and wrote hits including California Girls and Good Vibrations.

Mr Alexander added: "As one of the principle architects of the Beach Boys sound, Brian sold us visions of America that were infused with romanticism, hope and in places, sheer fragility. You listen to his music and you are transported by what it does. He has a sense of composition that is utterly unique to the point where is almost defies categorisation. Genius is the only word for it."

Gongs were also handed out to synthpop pioneer Gary Numan, who was given the Inspiration Award, and Glasgow folk-rocker Donovan, lower inset, who was given the Maverick Award.

Other winners at the awards, formally known as the Glenfiddich Mojo Honours List 2011, included Primal Scream, fronted by Bobby Gillespie from Springburn, top inset, Scottish 1980s Indie pioneers Orange Juice, soul singer Eddie Floyd and Public Image Ltd.

The band, fronted by former Sex Pistol John Lydon, picked up the award for Outstanding Contribution To Music.

Rumer won the Breakthrough Award but was beaten to the Best Album award by Arctic Monkeys who won it for their fourth album Suck It And See.

Grinderman's Heathen Child was named Song Of The Year while American singer John Grant won the Best Live Act Award.

The Mojo Medal Award was presented to DJ Bob Harris.
