Bears’ home almost ready

THE finishing touches are being made to an enclosure specially created at Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder for three mistreated circus bears.

Suzy, Carmen and Peggy will be rescued from a cramped holding centre in Belgium and are due to arrive at the West Lothian zoo on March 30.

The bears’ new home features a large built-in waterfall and stream, as well as indoor and outdoor enclosures. An £80,000 appeal, spearheaded by the zoo, is ongoing to raise the funds required to bring the bears to West Calder. Around £22,000 is still needed to transport and rehome them.

Five Sisters owner Brian Curran said: “Seeing the sanctuary almost complete makes it all the more real and we can’t wait to give them the new life that they deserve.”
