Bearing the brunt of surgery success

A VET from Edinburgh Zoo has become the first in the world to perform ground-breaking keyhole surgery on a bear.

Romain Pizzi, who works for The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, performed the complicated procedure on Map-map, an Asiatic Black Bear, at a sanctuary in Vietnam.

The 6ft, 25-stone animal had a life-threatening damaged gall bladder.

Mr Pizzi said he hoped the success of the operation would lead more vets to turn to the procedure.
