Insolvency amongst white-collar professionals rose by 20 per cent last year. It increased 12 per cent among the middle classes and 32 per cent for working classes.

Six Scottish towns were in the top 10. The others were Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Hamilton and Paisley.

But Yvonne MacDermid, chief executive of Money Advice Scotland, said that the number of those declaring themselves bankrupt in Scotland was down.
