Police Scotland revealed today that the sword had been recovered after officers on patrol in Banff on Monday had carried out a search of a 29-year-old local male near to the town’s Bridge Road.

A force spokesman said: “As a result of this search the male was found to be in possession of a sword concealed within his clothing. The male is expected to appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court today.”

Constable Neil MacLeod of the Banff Community Policing Team said: “This is a very unusual item to find, especially in the Aberdeenshire area. There is nothing to suggest that any members of the public were at risk from this male.”

Local Sergeant Bruce Crawford said: “Officers in Banff are committed to keeping people safe and will appropriately utilise their powers of search in order to ensure that the local community is not at risk from the minority of people who choose to behave in this way. A potentially dangerous weapon has been removed from the streets today.”
