Baby's killer in bid to clear name

A MAN who was jailed for at least 20 years for the "wicked" murder of his girlfriend's baby daughter is seeking to clear his name by taking his case the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission.

Mark Simpson, 30, was convicted of murdering six-week-old Alexis Matheson in 2007 following a trial at the High Court in Aberdeen last November.

Last week three judges refused his leave to appeal. At his trial defence counsel had argued there was not sufficient corroborating evidence to say he even assaulted the baby.

Yesterday his Aberdeen-based lawyer John McLeod confirmed that Webster was now proceeding with an application to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission in a case review process which could last up to nine months.

Mr McLeod said his client would be arguing that he is the victim of a miscarriage of justice.
