The baby was rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in a critical condition and later transferred 80 miles north to Yorkhill Hospital at Glasgow for specialist treatment.

A Dumfries and Galloway Police spokesman said yesterday: "The baby received serious injuries and has subsequently been transferred to Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow where his condition is described as critical."

A police spokesman added they could not confirm whether icy roads were a contributing factor to the crash.

No other person in the crash is believed to have been seriously injured.

The police statement added: "Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information regarding it is asked to come forward."
