Auld rugby rivals to dig in at dinner

A NEW sporting dinner bringing together Scotland’s rugby legends and supporters is being launched to celebrate the history of the Calcutta Cup and raise money for charity.

The Glengoyne Auld Enemy Dinner will take place at The Balmoral hotel on Friday – the eve of the historic fixture – in aid of Help for Heroes and The Bill McLaren Foundation.

Scotland and England rugby captains from the past four decades are set to join forces in the name of charity, including Jim Telfer, Finlay Calder, Brian Moore and Matt Dawson, as well as several Calcutta Cup veterans. It is hoped the dinner, which around 300 people are expected to attend, will become an annual charity event staged alternatively in Edinburgh and London on the night before the game.

Former Scotland star Scott Hastings, pictured, will be the MC for the event, which will also include an auction and raffles.

He said: “There will be 16 to 20 former international players so there will be plenty time for fans to get autographs and hear some stories.”
