Astronomer over moon with science medal

SCOTLAND’S Astronomer Royal Professor John Brown was yesterday presented with one of the world’s highest awards for science.

Prof Brown was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for his world-leading contributions to solar physics. Previous recipients include Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

He said: “It’s good to get another notch in the gun for Scottish astronomy, especially at a time when general interest in astronomy is at an all-time high. Scotland has been a bit under represented in these medals.”

Professor Brown, who received the medal at the National Astronomy Meeting (NAM) in Manchester, added: “This is the biggest NAM there has ever been, with around 1,000 astronomers taking part.

“Being surrounded by so many talented people makes me realise my discoveries are just a drop in the ocean.”

The citation read: “Throughout his distinguished and productive research career John has inspired the astronomical passions of thousands of people across the UK and overseas. His outstanding work in research, leadership and outreach make him a very worthy recipient of the Gold Medal.”
