Artists in at the deep end to help restore baths

Turner Prize artist Nathan Coley dived into his past when he joined a group of international artists donating work to an auction in aid of the historic Govanhill Baths.

Coley created a unique artwork to help restore the pool where he first learned to swim as a boy in Glasgow's South Side.

The artist returned to the baths for the first time in 30 years when he dropped off the piece, There Will Be No Miracles Here, specially made for a fund-raising auction this week.

He was given a tour of the baths from Francis Diver, his former art teacher at Shawlands Academy.

Coley said of his work: "I saw it as having a really positive meaning. There's no point waiting for God or the Fates to change something. What matters is what you do to change things, just as is happening with Govanhill Baths."

From Thursday, members of the public will be able to view work by 16 leading contemporary artists, also including Douglas Gordon, Jonathan Monk, Lucy Skaer and Toby Paterson, displayed around the pool.

The work of 40 local artists will be sold in a silent auction over the three-day event. The main works will be sold on Saturday by Gavin Strang of the Edinburgh firm of auctioneers, Lyon & Turnbull.
