Around town: Squaring up in Great Place title contest

THE best of St Andrew Square was showcased ahead of a crunch vote that could win it a prestigious national award.

Representatives of the city council gave a tour of the Georgian landmark to assessors from think-tank The Academy of Urbanism.

In May, the square was announced as one of three finalists for the title of Great Place of the Year at the annual Urbanism Awards, which recognise outstanding places whose design, feel and use contribute to a better quality of life.

Lawyers call for focus on family finance

CITY lawyer firm Gibson Kerr has warned many people risk leaving their affairs in jeopardy by not signing over sufficient Power of Attorney to their relatives.

The firm has said that people who appoint just one attorney or no-one risk leaving their families in a financial mess or with a costly court battle should they become incapacitated.

They have urged people to draw up the appropriate documents.

Green group sets AGM date

COMMUNITY environmental group Greener Leith is to hold its AGM next month.

The meeting will give an overview of what has been achieved over the year, and what is proposed for the coming year.

The AGM will take place on September 14 at 7.30pm in Leith Community Centre.

Fun for all at recycling day

THE Capital's biggest recycling centre played host to a family day at the weekend offering games, quizzes and giveaways.

Seafield Community Recycling Centre was opened to the public to teach people about the journey that waste takes and what can be done to reduce, reuse and recycle.

A CITY barber is set to close after its owner went bankrupt.

The estate of Grant Baxter, owner of Baxters Barber on Causewayside, was sequestrated at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on August 4. Creditors should submit claims to Wylie & Bisset.

Ellie in the Picture with concert

SINGER Ellie Goulding is coming to Edinburgh.

The singer-songwriter will play the HMV Picture House on October 31. She released the single Guns And Horses on May 17, while the last single from her debut album Lights, Starry Eyed, has sold 350,000 copies.

Public display for housing development plans

PLANS for a new housing development and food store in Slateford are to go on display at a public exhibition.

Developer Edistone Properties proposes to build a mixed-use development comprising residential properties, a nursing home, a foodstore and car parking on vacant land between Hutchison Road and Chesser Avenue.

The two-day exhibition of the plans will be held in St Aiden's Church, on Chesser Avenue on September 7 and 10.
