Around town: Road safety drive part of city car show

A HOST of experts will be delivering road safety messages to car enthusiasts at the Scottish Modified Car Show this weekend.

The event, at the Royal Highland Centre, is expected to attract up to 14,000 people.

Its main sponsor, Road Safety Scotland, is teaming up with Lothian and Borders Police to run a series of interactive events throughout Sunday's day-long show to educate drivers about the importance of safety and responsible driving.

New learning service set to be launched

A NEW learning service will be launched at New Kirkgate on Monday.

The Get On service has been created from the merger of two similar council services and will offer advice on education, training and other possibilities. Councillor Gordon Munro said: "I would recommend getting along to find out the opportunities available."

The launch runs from 11am until 1pm.

Byrne brews up solo gig

Singer Nick Byrne is to play a solo gig at a local coffee shop to raise money for cancer research.

The musician will playing the Starbucks on Princes Street this afternoon, where he will perform the whole of his new album. The is on 4.15pm and is the first of several such dates he will play across the UK.

Last orders for makeover

Pubs in the Capital are being given the chance to win a 2000 makeover.

The competition is run by paint brand Glidden Trade and has received the backing of the Campaign for Real Ale. The lucky landlords will receive colour and paint advice, plus money towards a re-opening party.

Businessmen get recognition

Two businessmen have been honoured at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Scotland Award Winners were John Muir of Muir Group, which was behind the revamp of Deer Park Golf and Country Club at Livingston, and Ian Gordon of the Bethany Christian Trust.

Price lined up for TV festival

More than 150 speakers, including Katie Price, have now been confirmed for this year's Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Youngsters quest for success across the Capital

Youngsters from across north Edinburgh will take place in this year's Quest event on July 23.

The annual treasure hunt, organised by Muirhouse Youth Development Group, will bring together 150 competitors from Muirhouse, Pilton, Drylaw, Royston Wardieburn and Granton. This year, Lothian Buses is sponsoring the event, providing day tickets to help the competitors trek right across the capital in search of clues. They will set off from Scottish Gas HQ on Waterfront Avenue.
