Around town: Music classes fall foul to the weather

All of the Edinburgh Young Musicians classes which were due to be held at James Gillespie's High School on Saturday have been cancelled, it has been announced.

Organisers of the EYM classes said they had been forced to call-off the lessons due to the continued bad weather, which would have made it difficult and potentially dangerous for pupils to travel in.

The classes had been due to go ahead tomorrow with around 300 children due to have been taking part.

a Member of staff at The Roxburghe Hotel in Charlotte Square has been named waiter of the year at the Macdonald Hotels and Resorts high achievers awards.

Restaurant supervisor Alycia Van Hage, who has worked at the hotel for just over a year, received the award at a ceremony in Windsor.

ST Mark's Unitarian Church in Castle Terrace will host a special service tomorrow afternoon to mark Interfaith Week.

The "Festival of Light - Three Faiths in One Space" is being staged by the St Mark's congregation, the Buddhist Sangha and the Liberal Jewish community.

The event at 3pm will include the lighting of Hanukkah candles, the Unitarian chalice and Buddhist meditative lights.

THE Scottish Storytelling Centre will host two events with Britain's storytelling laureate Taffy Thomas later this month.

Taffy will be accompanied by traditional singer Aimee Laura Thomas at the first event - Taffy Thomas: Christmas Tales - on 21 December.

A SHOAL of piranhas has travelled more than 400 miles through the snow to a new home at Deep Sea World in North Queensferry. The ten red-bellied piranhas had outgrown their display at an English aquarium and were collected by members of Deep Sea World's zoological team.

UP TO 1500 people are expected to attend this year's Challenge Scotland Christmas Events in Inverleith Park and the Royal Botanic Garden this Sunday. Organisers insisted that despite the poor weather the courses were fine to use and the events would go ahead. This year will include a new event, the Edinburgh Santa Toddle. Organisers hope around 300 toddlers will turn out to greet Santa at 12:15pm when he arrives to witness the Santa Toddle for the under six-year-old's and hand out the medals and goody bags.
