Around town: Filmmaking in focus on screen course

ASPIRING filmmakers in the Capital will have the opportunity to kick-start their career with the launch of a new course at Screen Academy Scotland.

The centre, which is part of Edinburgh Napier University, unveiled its new Film MA on Thursday. It will offer students the chance to focus on the discipline of their choice, from directing, cinematography, editing or sound, at a level beyond the BA Hons courses already offered.

The first intake will be in September.

Three arrests after licence plate stolen

THREE men have been arrested and charged in connection with the theft of a registration plate from a vehicle parked in Craigleith.

Pc Alan Millar, the Craigleith community beat officer, said the arrests were made following the theft in Gardiner Road last month.

Car cloners steal licence plates to attach to stolen cars leaving unsuspecting drivers landed with speeding and parking fines.

Cooking up a top exhibition

A FREE exhibition of work by photographer Alastair Cook will open at Out of the Blue in The Drill Hall, Dalmeny Street, on Friday.

The black and white images show the coast between Edinburgh and Holy Island and stretches in northern Scotland.

The exhibition, which runs until August 14.

Enjoy asthma family break

ABSEILING and kayaking will be among the activities on offer as part of Asthma UK's Kick Asthma family holiday at the city's Merchiston Castle.

The week-long holiday offers a mix of activities, as well as educational sessions. The event gets under way tomorrow and runs until next Saturday.

Grubb bids farewell to Guides

Lord Provost George Grubb will bid farewell to members of the Girl Guides' 1st Braid Rangers group on Monday as they set off on an international expedition called the Centenary Stampede.

The event will see them take on challenges in six countries.

New website Hailes history of Capital suburb

A NEW website exploring the history of Wester Hailes has been launched.

Local housing association Prospect has launched www.hailesmatters.wordpress.com to celebrate the area.

The introduction to the site states: "Prospect has always been interested in the story of Wester Hailes. As an area, it's often defined only by its problems, resulting in an unjustifiably negative image. We think there is plenty to be proud of in Wester Hailes and that the community's history is something to be celebrated.

Careers fair is a good choice

A CAREERS fair offering advice on everything from dealing with redundancy to preparing a CV will take place in Midlothian next month.
