Army HQ to face closure

The army's headquarters in Scotland faces closure under the government's defence cuts.

Craigiehall, near Cramond, has been occupied by the army since September 1939 and became divisional HQ for Scotland and the north of England in 1998. Around 250 staff are based there, under the command of Major General David Shaw, who is the only general in Scotland.

Maj Gen Shaw currently acts as General Officer Commanding 2nd Division and Governor of Edinburgh Castle. The role at the castle could be given instead to a retired general with only ceremonial duties.
