Armed man robs guard of £10,000 outside bank

More than £10,000 was stolen from a security guard outside a bank by a man carrying what appeared to be a gun.

The guard was threatened outside Airdrie Savings Bank in Muirhead, Lanarkshire, just before 9:30am yesterday.

He was carrying the cash in a box when a black car drove up and a man wearing a black balaclava got out of the passenger side, wielding what was believed to be a hand gun.

He grabbed the box and got straight back into the car, thought to be a Vauxhall Astra, which then sped off in the direction of Lenzie.

Police said no-one had been injured in the incident.

The first suspect is described as white and about 5ft 8in tall. He was wearing dark clothes.

The driver is said to have had short, dark brown hair and was wearing a grey or green padded jacket.

The car, which was seen in the area prior to the robbery, was later found burned out at Gartferry Road, in Moodiesburn.

Police have been reviewing CCTV images in an effort to trace the car’s movements and track down the robbers.

They have appealed for witnesses who were near the bank around the time of the robbery or who might have seen the car in Muirhead or in Moodiesburn to contact them.

Airdrie Savings Bank, the only remaining independent savings bank in the UK, has seven branches in North Lanarkshire.
