Archaeologists unearth Iron Age remains

THE remains of an Iron Age structure have been unearthed on a site in Skye where a new health centre is to be built.

Archaeologists made the discovery while the site was being cleared for the planned 1.3 million centre at Broadford.

It will delay the NHS Highland project by about two weeks while further excavations take place.

The finds include the underground structure, known as a souterrain, a burial cist containing a ceramic beaker, a grain drying kiln and a cairn.

Steven Birch, of West Coast Archaeological Services, said no human remains have been found in the cist, possibly due to the acidity of the soil. However, material has been taken away for chemical analysis to test for the presence of degraded human remains and any organic grave goods.
