Appeal aims to build 'Fife Village' in Pakistan

GORDON Brown will today launch an initiative to raise money for victims of the flood disaster in Pakistan.

The former Prime Minister will launch the latest stage of the Scotland's Response appeal in Fife. The appeal, originally set up by new Glasgow Central MP Anas Sarwar and Glasgow's Lord Provost Bob Winter, has so far raised more than 750,000 and will pay for hundreds of new homes for people displaced by the flooding that now covers 60,000 square miles.

Much of the money will be spent on the construction of 600 homes. Almost 40 homes have already been built and families are expected to begin moving in this week.

Ahead of the launch today, Mr Brown said: "Our efforts, within Fife, to help the Pakistani nation are to be recognised in a new settlement to be called 'the Fife Village'. It will be constructed in Pakistan to recall the fundraising efforts of Fife people through the Pakistan Floods Appeal - but this new initiative still needs more support.

"I have no doubt Fifers will again show their generosity."
