A spokeswoman for the Scottish SPCA said the charity had been alerted to the “horrifying incident” on Tuesday 25 June by the cat’s distraught owner.

She explained: “Four-year-old white and black cat Hamish managed to find his way back to his home on Elizabeth Street in Tayport, Fife, despite having a carrier bag secured around his head.”

Tom Gatherer, the SSPCA’S Deputy Chief Superintendent, said: “This was a disgraceful act which would have caused Hamish a great deal of terror and suffering.

“His owner saw him unharmed at 3pm on Tuesday and he then returned home with the bag over his head at around 5.30pm. Hamish was able to jump up on to the window-sill of his home and he

crashed into the window, alerting his owner to his ordeal.”

He continued: “If Hamish hadn’t been found he would have suffocated and he could also very easily have been knocked over as he wouldn’t have been able to see where he was going.

“His owner has advised that when he was eight months old, he returned home bleeding from his rear end. The vet said it was possible Hamish had been kicked and we do have to consider that these two incidents may be linked.”

Mr Gatherer added: “It is difficult to understand why anyone would do this to a defenceless animal and we need to identify the person responsible. If anyone has any information at all we would urge them to contact us, even anonymously, as soon as possible.”
