Appeal after 18 baby chicks abandoned in box

The animal welfare charity was alerted last Monday after a member of the public discovered the young birds in a box in woods close to Braehead Golf Club on Alloa Road in Cambus.

The chicks, who are estimated to be around three to four weeks old, are now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Kenny Sharpe, the centre’s assistant manager, said: “A number of chicks had escaped from the box but the woman who discovered them was able to catch some and take them to safety. Unfortunately there were others who ran off and were unable to be located.

“The chicks all seem healthy and happy now that they’re in our care. They are very active and eating well.”

He continued: “We think it’s possible they are maran chickens but we can’t be sure as it’s too early to tell if they’re male or female. Whoever left them clearly had no concern for their welfare and we are very keen to identify the person responsible.”

Mr Sharpe added: “If anyone comes across a chick in the area we’d ask them to contain it if they are able to and contact us for assistance. “We’ll soon be looking to find the chicks permanent homes where they can enjoy long and happy lives.”

An SSPCA spokeswoman explained: “Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

“Anyone who finds a chick or has information about the abandonment is urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.”
