Anonymous donation to see Old College finished at last

ONE of Edinburgh's architectural masterpieces is finally to be completed – 200 years after it was started.

The University of Edinburgh's Old College quadrangle is to have honey-coloured sandstone paving stones laid and a lawn created, thanks to an anonymous 1 million donation.

The paving and lawn will replace the grey gravel currently in the centre of the quadrangle.

The mystery benefactor gave the money specifically for the project, which will fulfil the vision of architects Robert Adam and William Playfair, who designed the building.

The landscaping will mark the completion of a grand design begun in 1789. Work will begin in September and is due to be completed in April next year.

The new-look quadrangle will be accessible to the public as well as students and staff and will continue to be used to host Festival events.

University of Edinburgh vice-principal Mary Bownes said: "As with many grand building projects, this one ran out of money more than once, and the quad was never completed. We hope it will be an inviting space on the Southside that will entice the local community."
