It follows the fortunes of the student after she meets a rich charmer called Dexter on graduation night. After one night together, they go their separate ways, but meet up on the same day each year to hear about one another's lives.

Hathaway plays opposite British actor Jim Sturgess, who co-starred in The Other Boleyn Girl.

The adaptation comes after another of Nicholls novels, Start for Ten, was turned into a film starring James McAvoy, Alice Eve and Rebecca Hall.

A spokeswoman for the capital's film agency, Edinburgh Film Focus, confirmed the production was in town but was unable to say where the shoot would be based.
