Analysis: Why I'm packing more potions than Harry Potter

I OFTEN wonder why my right shoulder is aching, then realise it's because, as well as my wallet and keys, I'm carrying an arsenal of three lip-glosses, a lipstick, foundation, powder, a stick blusher and a roller-ball perfume.

I'd partially blame the ongoing trend for huge shoulder bags, which allows one to accumulate a Boots-branch-worth of potions.

I rarely use most of this stuff (the lip-balm and the powder are the only items that get reapplied regularly), so I'd say that the beauty collection is mainly there so that I can be prepared for any eventuality.

For example, if there's an impromptu night out after work, foundation and blusher can even out a blotchy-looking complexion.

Then, there are the necessary skincare items, such as hand lotion and Elizabeth Arden's 8 Hour Cream (about 21), which are comforting for irritated and chapped skin.

Sometimes I'll carry around dry shampoo for ages, in the hope that I'll manage a lunchtime session at the gym.

After a quick calculation, I'd say that the beauty contents of my handbag probably hit the 256 mark revealed by this research.

However, after a straw poll of the office, I'd say I'm a rarity..Most of the women I know travel light, with that 99p lip-balm (and a powder compact at the most) being the only must-have item.
