Officers confirmed yesterday they are no longer investigating the alleged attack.

McGregor, 28, was said to have suffered eye and back injuries following an incident on the night of Saturday, 20 February.

Shevlin told police she later found him lying injured near their home and demanded they catch the "morons" who carried out the attack.

At the weekend, she dismissed rumours that she was involved in the attack, saying: "Anyone who believes I was involved in the attack needs to see a doctor.

"Allan is 6ft 2in tall and I'm 5ft 4in small."

But yesterday, police charged Shevlin with wasting their time after questioning her at Stewart Street police station.

The arrest adds another twist to a tale that has dominated tabloid headlines since the attack was reported.

McGregor received treatment at the Southern General Hospital and was later discharged after the alleged assault.

The footballer, who was photographed with a black eye, reported the alleged assault to police two days later, telling detectives the attack happened in Bath Street.

He was interviewed by officers for a second time last Friday, amid claims of "inconsistencies" in his story.

Yesterday, Shevlin was arrested at the couple's 900,000 home in the west end.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "A 27-year-old female is the subject of a report to the procurator-fiscal for wasting the time of police."

The goalkeeper was left out of the Scotland squad to face the Czech Republic last night, but was fit for the Old Firm clash on Sunday, which Rangers won 1-0.

Speaking immediately after the alleged incident, Shevlin said: "The police better find those morons before I do. Even if Allan can't remember, I want to find out what happened to him.

"I got home to find him unconscious in the street.

"He didn't have a clue what was going on. There was quite a lot of blood. It was a horrible experience. Allan doesn't know how he got home.

"He doesn't know who did it and he doesn't know where it happened."

Last night, a Rangers source said: "Allan's team-mates have been giving him pelters over the attack ever since he it happened."

Last week, detectives turned up at Rangers' training ground to take McGregor for questioning over his version of events.

Police wanted to speak to him after seizing CCTV footage from the Seventh Heaven lap-dancing bar on the night of the alleged attack.

They also studied film taken from cameras near the couple's home.

X-rays showed damage to his eye socket and cheekbone, but they were not fractured. McGregor also suffered a bad graze on his back, sources said last night.

A Rangers spokesman declined to comment on Shevlin's arrest.
