All the world's a stage for Youtube film-making first

THOUSANDS OF amateur film-makers around the globe yesterday took part in a groundbreaking experiment to create the world's first full-length Youtube movie.

Life In A Day, directed by Oscar-winning Scot Kevin Macdonald and produced by Alien director Ridley Scott, will bring together thousands of pieces of footage shot over the course of 24 July and uploaded on to Youtube to create one film, providing a snapshot of life on earth on that one day.

Macdonald, who directed The Last King of Scotland, said: "What I want to do is make a film unlike any film that's ever been made."

Film-makers will have a week to upload their footage before the first films start to appear on the Youtube website in August. The film will debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and every person whose footage is used in the film will be listed in the credits as a co-director.

Macdonald said: "We can use it to make a film that is a record of what it's like to be alive on that one day. It'll be kind of like a time capsule, which people in the future could look at and say: 'Oh my God, that's what it was like. A portrait of the world in a day.'"

Macdonald encouraged Youtubers to film something which could, to them, "seem very banal". He cited examples such as "a journey to work, watching your baby at bath time, going to the hospital to visit a friend, your birthday or going for a walk in the countryside."
