The First Minister expressed a preference for the programme when asked which reality show he would like to star on. During a live webchat on the Gransnet social networking site, Mr Salmond was offered a choice of Strictly, the Tom Daley diving show Splash! and I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!

Splash! was dismissed on the grounds that there was already enough rain in Scotland. I’m a Celebrity… did not appeal as he “can’t eat bugs” and he might meet a Tory MP.

Mr Salmond also gave a tantalising hint on the timing of the independence referendum. He suggested it would be before 26 October, the date the clocks change.

He said he would take on David Cameron in a TV debate “anytime, anywhere” and predicted the “dispiriting, fear-mongering” No campaign would “run out of puff”.

On England, he said he liked English people but didn’t like “some of” the MPs. The First Minister said Scotland would still be “best pals” with England after independence.
