Adventurer plans new plaque for Rockall

AN ISLAND adventurer hopes to cement the UK's claim to a remote Atlantic outcrop by erecting a plaque on Rockall.

The plaque, will be delivered and cemented in place by access rights campaigner Andy "Islandman" Strangeway.

Mr Strangeway discovered a 1955 plaque was missing in 2008, when he attempted to spend the night on the outpost, 180 miles off the Western Isles.

With the government having stated no objection to him replacing the plaque, and with planning permission granted by Western Isles council, Mr Strangeway, now has another major reason to make it out and land on the 21 metre high sea-stack.

Mr Strangeway, 45, from Yorkshire – already the first and only person to land and sleep on all of Scotland's 162 islands that are 40 hectares or larger – hopes to become the fifth person ever to sleep on Rockall, and the first to do so without shelter.
