A plethora of new courses

THE £750 million golf resort plans by Donald Trump, below, in Aberdeenshire have grabbed most of the headlines, but there have been other courses developed in recent years with less fanfare.

They include Castle Stuart, near Inverness, where the Barclay's Scottish Open will be played this week. In 2009 a new layout was introduced at Machrihanish Dunes, marking the first new course on the west of Scotland in a century.

In 2008, Askernish, South Uist, laid out in 1891, was fully restored, and last year saw the opening of Rowallan Castle Golf Club in Ayrshire, designed by Colin Montgomerie.
