A hush-hush hometown wedding for Jamie Murray

TENNIS star Jamie Murray returned to his Perthshire hometown to marry his Colombian fiancée yesterday in a small, low-key ceremony.

Murray, 24, a former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, and Alejandra Gutierrez exchanged vows in the private chapel at Cromlix House, an exclusive five-star country house just outside Dunblane.

His brother Andy, 23, who is currently ranked the No 4 tennis player in the world, was his best man.

Andy attended with his long-term girlfriend, Kim Sears. The brothers wore kilts in the traditional blue and green Murray of Elibank tartan.

The Church of Scotland ceremony was conducted by the Rev Alex Mitchell, of St Blane's Church in Dunblane, and was attended by about 40 family members and close friends.

Judy Murray arrived for her son's wedding in a 20-ft stretch silver limo with blacked-out windows.

There had been concerns that Jamie's grandmother, Shirley Erskine, might miss the wedding as she recovered from surgery to her hip, but she was able to attend with her husband, Roy, who also wore the kilt.

Mrs Erskine made the wedding cake, which featured the flag of Colombia and the Saltire in icing.

The wedding was such a private affair that many townspeople were unaware it was taking place.

Cathie, a volunteer at Mary's Meals charity shop in the High Street, said: "It's lovely for the town. Jamie's a Dunblane lad, and it's nice that he respects the town to come back for his special day."

Sheila Kyle, who works in a dry cleaner's, said: "This is the first I've heard of it. It seems like Jamie keeps a lower profile than his brother, but he is equally well-liked."

Jamie and Alejandra met in London, where she was studying business after graduating in industrial design at Bogot.
