A MAN was treated for smoke inhalation after a blaze ripped through a house off Corstorphine Road this morning.

The casualty, aged in his 40s, was sleeping when the fire started at around 4.30am but managed to escape before crews arrived and extinguished it.

The fire started in the first floor of the house in Belmont Gardens and broke through to a converted attic space.

• A FLIGHT bound for the Capital had to divert to an airport in England after running low on fuel, it was reported today.

Strong winds meant the Jet2.com flight carrying 138 passengers from Czech capital Prague to Edinburgh had to land in Newcastle.

One passenger reportedly said: "The captain said 'we've got a bit of a fuel shortage'.

"Some people were really worried."

After refuelling, the flight continued to Edinburgh, arriving one-and-a-half hours later shortly after 9pm.

A spokesman for the Jet2.com airline said: "The pilot took the decision to divert as a precaution."

• THE fundraising target for redeveloping the National Museum of Scotland has been exceeded by almost 1 million.

A total of 13.6m was raised for the new museum, which is due to open in July.

There will be 16 new galleries holding 8000 objects, most of which will go on display for the first time in generations.
