9am Briefing: Two in hospital after crash

The accident took place on the A801 north bound between Armadale and Bathgate at around 5.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters removed the roof from one of the cars to release a woman suffering from neck, back and spinal injuries.

A man travelling in the other car had a broken sternum and left arm.

Both were taken to the Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

Scot has won Wimbledon

A SCOT has already won the Wimbledon men's singles title, it has emerged.

Harold Mahony clinched the title in 1896 – meaning that Andy Murray could only become the second Scottish man to win tennis's top tournament.

Historians at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum revealed that Mahony, often thought of as Irish, was born in Edinburgh.

Mahony lost his title the following year in a straight sets final against Wimbledon-born Reggie Doherty. He was born at 21 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, on 13 February 1867, but only lived in Scotland as a young child and was raised in Ireland.

Man suffers burns in fire

A MAN suffered burns during a fire in Winchburgh last night.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze in the third-storey flat in Glendevon Park, Winchburgh, at around 9:30pm.

The 39-year-old man presented himself to ambulance crews with burns.

A police spokesman said the man's injuries were not serious, and described the fire as the product of "a domestic incident". The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Recovery on the way

SCOTLAND is on the road to economic recovery despite a blip caused by the poor winter weather, according to a report published today.

The Lloyds TSB Scotland Business Monitor survey shows a "tentative exit" from recession, with five of the last six quarters showing an improvement in company turnovers.

A poorer economic performance between December and February was blamed on the harsh weather.
