9am Briefing: Two charged over Leith flats murder

TWO men have been charged in connection with the murder of John Carter, who died after being found in a lift in a block of flats in Leith.

Police said two men, aged 40 and 47, would appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court later today. Mr Carter died at the ERI shortly after being found in the lift at Salamander Court on February 27.

• A male nursery teacher has been charged by police following allegations of sexual abuse. The 39-year-old has been suspended from his job at Stenhouse Primary's nursery while police and council investigations are carried out. He is due to appear in court on May 18.

• A 30 MILLION revamp of the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston has been given the go-ahead by councillors. The first major development will be a 165-bedroom hotel, due to open next year, next to Eastfield Road. The project will also include a new main entrance, a major new exhibition hall, an agricultural "centre of excellence" and a new main pavilion overlooking the showground arena.

• A man was taken to hospital after his car was in collision with an ambulance. The incident on Gilmerton road at around 6.50pm yesterday occurred as the ambulance was taking a patient to hospital, although it was not an emergency call. The patient was transferred to hospital in another ambulance and the car driver was also taken to hospital, after suffering a hand injury.
