9am Briefing: Tram link doubles in cost to £40m

THE final bill for a transport interchange at Gogar which would link Edinburgh-Fife trains with the Capital's tram project has doubled to £40 million, it was reported today.

Reports today said the cost of the Gogar interchange had risen from initial estimates of 20m last summer to 35m, with improvements to nearby Gogar roundabout expected to cost an extra 5m.

Man saved from blaze

A MAN was rescued by firefighters today following a blaze at a flat in Livingston.

The 29-year-old was taken to hospital suffering the effects of smoke inhalation after being lowered out of a first-floor window in Logan Way at around 3:35am. He had taken refuge inside his flat after being given "survival advice" over the phone until firefighters arrived.

Russell backs schools plan

EDUCATION minister Michael Russell has given broad backing to a radical scheme by East Lothian Council to transfer clusters of schools to arms-length trusts.

He said yesterday the controversial scheme might fit in "perfectly" with the Scottish Government's plans.

Omni Centre lights kill the mood

HUNDREDS of Valentine's couples were left out in the cold after one of the Capital's most popular entertainment venues was evacuated.

The Omni Centre was emptied at around 10.15pm on Saturday night after lights in the main complex overheated and set the alarms off.
