9am Briefing: Toddler in hospital after dog attack

A CITY toddler is in hospital after being attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier at the weekend.

Jemma Horn nearly lost her left eye after the dog turned on her at a family get-together on Saturday afternoon.

The two-year-old was playing with her twin brother Robbie in her grandmother Margaret's garden in North Berwick when the attack happened.

Her father Robert, 43, rushed her to the Sick Kids Hospital, where she received stitches to her nose and the area below her eye.

Firefighters battle old childcare centre blaze

A BLAZE has ripped through a derelict childcare centre in West Pilton.

The fire at the West Pilton Children's Centre started at about 1pm on Sunday with around 20 firefighters battling the flames for four hours.

Three fire appliances and one line of hose were used to get the fire under control, plus a number of special appliances and a thermal imaging camera.

Police are investigating if the fire was suspicious.

Man killed by lorry

A MAN was hit by a lorry and killed while walking on the M8.

The pedestrian was struck near Harthill services between Edinburgh and Glasgow at around 9.15pm last night.

The westbound carriageway was closed as investigators attended the scene.

A police spokesman said the man had been struck by a passing heavy goods vehicle.
