9am Briefing: Stolen paintings worth £200,000 seized at auctioneers

STOLEN paintings worth more than £200,000 have been recovered by police after one of them turned up in a catalogue for Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers.

A museum curator spotted Wooded Landscape With Figures, by Jean Baptiste-Camille Corot, in November and alerted police. When they investigated, the auction house said it was the second painting it had offered for sale from the same person - who has not yet been named.

The other painting has also been recovered, and police are reported to have seized a third from the person's home. Investigations are continuing.

• EDINBURGH has been named as having the worst roads in Scotland in an AA report. The study ranked the Capital bottom of the league in a survey which covered 12 issues, ranging from dog fouling to roadworks.

City road chiefs said the findings were based on a small sample and the city's roads were improving - but acknowledged that there was still a long way to go, and that problems had been made worse by the recent cold weather.

• Gail Sheridan has lodged a complaint against Lothian and Borders Police about her treatment during the perjury investigation into her and her husband.

Aamer Anwar, who represents the Sheridans, said he had written to the Chief Constable about officers taking away Mrs Sheridan's rosary beads during an interview, and had also written to the Lord Advocate, Elish Angiolini, over claims she was mistreated by police during the inquiry.

• The Assembly Theatre is to move its Fringe operation from George Street to George Square.

Its traditional home, the Assembly Rooms, will not open this year due to renovation by the city council, so the operation will move to three or four venues in and around the square, along with two Spiegeltents in the gardens. Director William Burdett Coutts said it would be a long-term move.
