9am Briefing: SNP may drop opposition to trams

THE SNP group on the city council is preparing to drop its opposition to the tram project, it is reported today. After failing to persuade fellow councillors to drop the scheme at a meeting last week, the group says it may take to abstaining on tram votes, rather than actively opposing the project as it has done in the past.

• THE A1 is closed in both directions at Dunbar this morning after a car hit the central reservation at around midnight last night.

• INDIA and China will be the focus of next year's Edinburgh International Festival. Director Jonathan Mills leaves today on a trip to the two countries to encourage music, theatre and dance companies to take part in the festival. He also hopes to encourage the governments of both countries to support the event financially.

• BROADCASTER STV has released its interim results for the three months to October 21, with airtime revenues up 10 per cent.

It says the growth is predicted to continue into November. Chairman Richard Findlay said: "Whilst the longer term macro-economic outlook is uncertain, we are continuing to deliver growth across the business and achieve targeted levels of traffic to our digital platforms."
