9am Briefing: Police rule out any crimes at Tobin's former seaside home

POLICE today ruled out any crimes linked to serial killer Peter Tobin at a second seaside property where he used to live.

Search teams and forensic archaeologists have spent 15 days excavating a large rear garden and forensically examining the basement areas of the house in Brighton.

But Sussex Police said the search revealed no evidence linking the property in Marine Parade to crimes by Tobin who lived there in the late 1980s.

Surfing reef 'damaged'

A RENOWNED east coast surfing point is at the centre of claims the reef which produces its iconic waves has been damaged.

The reef at Pease Bay, near Dunbar, East Lothian, is a well-surfed break owing to the rock formation location near a caravan park.

But surfers claim its reputation has been threatened by emergency work to repair sand dunes in front of the holiday park.

13m spent educating children of diplomats

THE Foreign Office spent more than 13 million sending the children of British diplomats to private schools last year, it was revealed.

The bill to the taxpayer for officers serving overseas was 5.8 million and 7.4 million was spent on UK-based staff, official figures show.

Separately, 48 members of the Department for International Development on overseas postings received payments worth 1.3 million and these were used to pay to send children to private schools including Fettes College.

Airport boss defends drop-off charge

OUTGOING Edinburgh Airport managing director Gordon Dewar has defended the proposed 1 drop-off charge as the airport opened its new departure lounge.

Mr Dewar, who leaves the post on Friday, said imposing the charge was "the right thing to do," but his successor Kevin Brown, was non-committal, and said it was "one of the many things" he would have to look at.

The expanded departure lounge includes 12 new retailers and a larger security hall with more X-ray machines and opened yesterday.
