9am Briefing: Police hunt sex attacker

POLICE are investigating a serious sexual assault on a woman in South Queensferry.

Forensic officers carried out an examination of a taped off area in High Street close to the Ferry Tap pub where the attack is believed to have taken place. It was reported locally that a woman was attacked there on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, police are urging a woman who they believe was trying to draw attention to herself from the back of a car to come forward and let them know she is safe.

The woman, thought to be in her 50s, was in the back seat of a blue or dark blue four-door hatchback at a set of traffic lights in the Grange area of Edinburgh, when she was spotted trying to attract attention from members of the public.

The car was stopped on Causewayside before turning on to Salisbury Place at around 7.25pm on Wednesday. A man was driving the car.

• FOUR children were taken to hospital to be checked over after an alleged spillage of waste chemicals near a dental practice.

Firefighters were called to the surgery in Market Place in Whitburn, West Lothian, at around 5.20pm on Saturday, following reports of a spillage of mercury capsules.

Lothian and Borders Police said it was believed the children may have come into contact with traces of chemical residue from waste products behind the surgery.

• A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy was rushed to hospital with multiple injuries after being hit by a car on Saturday.

The youngster, who has not been named, suffered a broken collar bone, cuts to his head and arm injuries in the accident in Granton.

He was also treated for minor scrapes and bruises.

Ambulance crews drove the boy to the city's Sick Kids hospital for treatment.

A hospital spokesman said the injuries to the youngster were not life threatening.

• FIREFIGHTERS tackled blazes in Wester Hailes and the Grassmarket last night.

A small fire broke out in the kitchen of a flat at Hailesland Park, Wester Hailes, at around 8.25pm which was extinguished using breathing apparatus and a hose reel. Crews from Sighthill and Tollcross snuffed out the flames at the first-floor flat within 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, an electrical fire was sparked at a third-floor maisonette in Castle Wynd South, Grassmarket, at around 7.15pm. There were no casualties at either incident.
