9am Briefing: Parliament to ask questions about tram plans

QUESTIONS are to be asked in the Scottish Parliament about Edinburgh's tram project.

Malcolm Chisholm, Labour MSP for Edinburgh North and Leith, is demanding to know why 70 per cent of the 545 million budget has been paid, but only 22 per cent of work has been completed.

Guests flee hotel fire

SIX guests had to leave in a hurry when fire ripped through the kitchen of the 15th century Retreat Castle Hotel in Bonnyrigg.

Hotelier Peter Hood rounded led the guests, six members of staff, his wife and two children to safety after fire alarms alerted him to the blaze.

Tenement evacuated after blaze

A WHOLE tenement block had to be evacuated in Polwarth when a fire took hold in a flat on Saturday night.

Three people had to be rescued from the four-storey Watson Crescent tenement, including a man suffering from the effects of severe smoke inhalation and a man and woman trapped on the second floor, while another 12 occupants got themselves out.

Horse fall woman in hospital

A HORSEWOMAN was taken to hospital following a fall at the second revival of the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches.

The woman, an Edinburgh March Riding Association committee member in her 30s, was hospitalised following the fall on the march from Straiton to Mercat Cross yesterday, which also saw four other falls.

None of the riders was seriously injured and the woman was released from hospital in time for the after-show party.
