9am Briefing: Murder probe after disabled man found dead

POLICE are investigating the suspected murder of a man thought to have been stabbed in Niddrie.

Neighbours said yesterday that they believed the 64-year-old victim, who has not been named, was a disabled man.

Police and paramedics were called to Niddrie Marischal Drive at 5.45pm.

FORMER home secretary Alan Johnson today announced he will not stand for the Labour leadership and will back David Miliband for the job.

Deputy leader Harriet Harman has taken over as acting leader until the party chooses a successor to Gordon Brown.

Other possible contenders include former education secretary Ed Balls, Mr Miliband's brother Ed Miliband, veteran cabinet minister Jack Straw and influential backbencher Jon Cruddas.

Firefighters battle blaze

FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze at the Old Mansion House in Dalkeith last night.

The building in Newmills Road, which was being renovated, was reported to be on fire just before 9pm.

Around 37 firefighters arrived to tackle the flames in the roof space.

There was noone in the building.

Craig reveals Crags horror

BRITAIN'S Got Talent hopeful Craig Stephens today revealed that he survived a horror 70ft fall in his childhood at Salisbury Crags.

The 41-year-old singer, who with his wife Deborah forms pop act Othelio, earned the nickname Bionic Boy after he slipped off the edge of the cliffs beside Arthur's Seat in 1979.

He landed in a bush before being raced to Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Kids, where he stayed for a week.
