Random searches have been introduced at privately-run Addiewell, in West Lothian, to uncover weapons following a spate of stabbings.

Prison bosses have installed the 25,000 detectors, which will also find home-made weapons.

Pilot tells of recovery after beating put him in a coma

A PILOT who was battered and left for dead while on a stag night has said he felt "like a child" as he recovered his health.

Edinburgh-born Stuart Martin, 30, was left in a coma after he was assaulted by three teenagers in New Zealand. He spent four weeks in hospital before returning to Scotland, where he was being cared for by his parents in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

He is now walking without a wheelchair following months of therapy after the attack in February 2009.

City tops breaks poll

EDINBURGH is one of the top destinations in the UK for city breaks, a new poll has revealed.

The Capital was voted the best place in the country for restaurants, and the second best for shopping, history, entertainment and romance.

It came second only to York in the survey by holiday letting agency, cottages4you.

Fire probe after garages blaze

A FIRE investigation has been launched after a blaze in a block of private garages last night.

Firefighters were called out to the incident at Clermiston Crescent just after 6:30pm last night and found one garage well alight.

A second garage is also understood to have been damaged in the fire, which was quickly extinguished by the crew from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue service.
