9am Briefing: Man rushed to hospital after flats blaze

A MAN has been rushed to hospital with severe burns to his face after a fire broke out at a block of flats in Edinburgh this morning.

The 60-year-old was rescued by fire crews after the blaze took hold of two flats in Parkgrove Bank in Clermiston around 5am this morning.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene for burns to his face and arms before taking him to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Three other people, a seven-year-old boy, a 51-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man, were also treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

• HOMEOWNERS were counting the cost today after a burst main submerged their street and gardens under several feet of water.

Residents of Allan Park Road in Slateford were woken by the burst 24in water main at around 3.30am on Saturday morning, but the water did not start to recede until around 8am.

As water gushed down the street people saw the water level in their gardens rise to almost three feet, filling basements and washing debris across the road.

• NHS 24 has apologised to a swine flu victim for refusing to send an ambulance after she collapsed, it was reported today.

Jane Howie, 40, of Dalkeith, collapsed at home on Christmas Day and lay unconscious for 15 hours. When she came round and called NHS 24 to request an ambulance she was told the service was busy with life-threatening calls. She dialled 999 and paramedics found she had dangerously low blood pressure and she was later diagnosed with swine flu.

• AROUND 100 troops from the Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1 Scots), paraded through Livingston in a march to mark their battalion being granted the freedom of the area.

The battalion was also marking the final parade in the area of the colours of the Royal Scots during the event on Saturday.

The battalion, who performed a mentoring and ground-holding role in Afghanistan last year, are set to receive new colours in July.
