9am Briefing: Man killed in fire at protest camp

A MAN has been killed and a woman is in hospital after a blaze at an environmental protest camp in Midlothian.

The man died after the fire broke out at the camp in Bilston shortly after 3am today.

• THE children of a Lothian and Borders Police officer who was found dead have spoken of their "devastating" loss.

Pc John Burke's children, aged 12 and 16, said they were in shock following the discovery of his body in a patch of open ground in the Cowpits area of Musselburgh last Thursday.

In a statement released by police, the children, who asked not to be named, said: "We are still shocked by the news. He was an amazing dad and we still can't believe that we will never see him again.

"We were so proud of him and the work he did as a police dog handler.

"We loved him so much and he loved us more than anything."

His body was found on open ground by a member of the public who was walking in the area. Police are treating the death as "unexplained".

• A MAN and a woman were taken to hospital after the car they were travelling in struck a lamppost.

The single vehicle accident took place on Lanark Road just before 3.30am yesterday.

The 21-year-old woman and 18-year-old man were knocked unconscious by the impact and taken to the ERI by ambulance. They were both placed on spinal boards but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Firefighters helped paramedics remove the casualties from the car.

• A WOMAN was led to safety by firefighters after a discarded cigarette caused a fire at her Kingsknowe Place flat.

The 46-year-old was rescued by the fire crew after the blaze broke out at 7.40pm last night.

The woman was examined by paramedics at the scene but did not need to go to hospital.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said the damage to the flat was thought to be minimal.
