9am Briefing: Man killed by car is named

A MAN who was killed after being knocked down by a car during rush hour traffic has been named by police.

Alan Wilson, 35, of Wheatfield Terrace in Gorgie, died after stepping out from behind a G4 Security van to cross the road and being struck by a grey Fiat Punto.

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the collision, which happened in South Gyle Crescent at around 8.55am on Tuesday.

Police and paramedics were called, but Mr Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is the fourth person to receive the honour, following in the footsteps of Ian Rankin, JK Rowling and Sir Chris Hoy, all of whom were recognised for helping to bring international recognition to the city.

• A 10-YEAR-OLD boy was among those who escaped a fire at a terraced house in Broxburn last night.

Fire crews were called to the town's Henderson Crescent after a blaze broke out in the second floor bedroom of the property at around 6.15pm.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said the only casualty was the 10-year-old boy, who was complaining of stinging to his face, but was not injured.
