9am Briefing: Man in court over alleged murder attempt

A man will appear at Haddington Sheriff Court today charged in connection with an alleged attempted murder in East Lothian.

The 27-year-old was arrested following the incident in Fishers Wynd during the evening of Saturday, February 5.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, suffered injuries to his head, arm and abdomen in the alleged attack. Police say their investigation is ongoing.

• Seven people were rescued from their homes last night when fire broke out in a tenement basement in Southside.

The fire in South Clerk Street took hold at around 7.50pm and around 35 firefighters using breathing apparatus fought the blaze while police cordoned off the street outside. No one was injured.

• Hearts midfield Rudi Skacel is suing his ex-girlfriend, saying she spent 43,000 from their joint account after they split up without permission.

The footballer has brought the case at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to try and reclaim the money from Savannah Fairnie, from Musselburgh. She says he gave her the go-ahead to spend the money after they split in September 2009. The case is continuing.

• The Royal Yacht Britannia is to be closed to the public for at least a month for an overhaul of its hull.

The historic vessel will move from its home in Leith to a nearby dry dock for the work to be carried out on the orders of its insurers. The yacht will be closed for the whole of next January to have its hull inspected, treated and repainted.
