9am Briefing: Man dies in flat blaze

A MAN has died in an early morning flat fire in Edinburgh.

The victim was pulled from his burning flat on the third floor of a high-rise block in Niddrie but did not survive. An investigation is underway into the cause of the blaze which broke out at 1.15am in Greendykes House. See today's Evening News for the full story.

LABOUR received a last-minute boost today as one opinion poll showed a three-point surge in support as voters headed to the polling stations in Edinburgh.

Obua mourns father

HEARTS star David Obua is mourning the death of his father who died just hours before last weekend's Edinburgh derby.

Obua, 30, only heard news of his father's death when he left the field after bagging the last minute winner in the Tynecastle club's 2-1 victory at Hibs' Easter Road stadium on Saturday.

Phone probe at prison

AN investigation has been launched at Addiewell Prison after a prisoner was apparently discovered using a smuggled mobile phone to browse his Bebo site. Prisoner Graham Murray, 28, from Dedridge, was said to have posted regular updates on the social networking site from his cell at the West Lothian jail.

Flights returning to normal

FLIGHTS were returning to normal at Edinburgh Airport today as staff began clearing the backlog of cancelled flights.

Passengers were left stranded yesterday after aviation chiefs took the decision to close Scottish airspace from 1pm due to the reappearance of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland, leading to the cancellation of 135 flights at Edinburgh alone.
