9am Briefing: Man charged over death of pensioner

A MAN has been charged in connection with the death of a pensioner in the Capital.

The body of 74-year-old Rosie Sutherland was discovered in her sheltered housing bungalow in Longstone Park at around 2pm on Sunday.

Lothian and Borders Police said a 25-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

* A MUM has told how she passed her driving test while in labour - then drove herself to hospital to give birth.

Emma French, 20, had four contractions, which were 10 minutes apart, during her exam, it was reported today.

Emma, from Livingston, said: “Everyone was telling me I had to go to hospital but I had waited so long for my test, I was determined to do it. I didn’t dare tell the examiner I was in labour in case he made me cancel the test.”

Emma gave birth to baby, Eva MacFarlane.

* BOND legend Sir Roger Moore has revealed that he has trouble understanding his predecessor Sir Sean Connery.

In a speech to Cambridge students, the star admitted: “Sean is a good actor, it’s a pity I can’t understand what he’s saying.”

Moore last played the secret agent in 1985’s A View To A Kill and was the longest-serving Bond actor.

* A 70-YEAR-OLD woman suffered burns to her leg when fire broke out in the living room of a flat in a sheltered housing complex.

Firefighters were called to the three-storey Old Farm Court complex in Colinton Road at 9.22pm yesterday.

The woman was attended to at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.

A 72-year-old woman in one of the other flats was given oxygen because of a condition which affected her breathing.

* ALEX Salmond has been compared to Robert Mugabe by a Tory peer in exchanges in the House of Lords.

Lord Cormack, a former MP and historian, likened Mr Salmond to the Zimbabwean leader who secured independence for his country in 1979 or his white predecessor Ian Smith, who declared unilateral independence for Rhodesia in 1965.

Lord Cormack asked: “Is the First Minister of Scotland seeking to emulate Ian Smith or Robert Mugabe?”
