9am Briefing: Man and boy rescued from house fire

A MAN and a three-year-old boy had to be rescued after a fire broke out in their home while they were asleep.

Firefighters were called to Ferry Road Avenue at 9:40pm last night and rescued the 41-year-old man and the boy after a fire which started in the kitchen of the ground floor flat.

They were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Richey's hope for brother

FREED death row Scot Kenny Richey has said he hopes his brother Tom will learn from his mistakes when he is released from prison.

Tom, who was sentenced to 65 years in America for murdering one man and assaulting another while high on the drug LSD, is to be freed after 23 years behind bars.

Speaking to the Evening News from his family home in Minnesota, Kenny said: "He's seen the mistakes I made so hopefully he won't do the same."

Power cut in Capital

HUNDREDS of homes and businesses in the Capital, including Waverley Station, suffered a power cut last night.

Scottish Power said a cable fault in the Canongate area was to blame.

Around 300 properties - including Waverley Station - had their power restored at 8:30pm, while a further 200 had their power back on just after 9pm.

The rest of the properties and business had power restored at 11:25pm.

Spiegeltent missing from Fringe

A MAJOR Fringe venue looks set to be missing from the event for the second year running.

The popular Spiegeltent, which in previous years has been based at Edinburgh University's George Square Gardens, looks unlikely to appear again this year after a dispute over the use of the site.

David Bates, founder of the Spiegeltent blamed last minute problems over the hiring of the site, it was reported today.
