9am Briefing: Labour say no tram lifeline if they are elected

SCOTTISH Labour leader Iain Gray has refused to offer a lifeline to Edinburgh's troubled trams project.

He signalled there was unlikely to be any additional funding for the project if Labour were to return to power after next year's Scottish Parliament elections.

Mr Gray told Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce yesterday that Labour would deliver a new Forth Road Bridge and reinstate the Glasgow Airport Rail Link, but he blamed the Liberal Democrat-SNP coalition running Edinburgh City Council for making a "terrible mess" of the trams project.

He said afterwards: "I'm not going to give a commitment for any additional funding and am not making any other promises about the trams."

Two in hospital after crash

TWO DRIVERS are in hospital after a three-car collision near Balerno.

The accident, which happened at 9.30pm last night, involved three cars travelling on the A72.

A 19-year-old and a 58-year-old man, who were each driving a vehicle, were taken to the ERI, though their condition is unknown.

Historic manuscripts on display

KEY historic manuscripts from the Scottish Reformation have gone on show at the National Library of Scotland.

The new display, on George IV Bridge, includes documents and letters from the time of Scotland's break with the papacy and the establishment of Protestantism. Among them are John Knox's "Scottish Confession of Faith" and his "First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women.

The exhibition runs until October 31.
