9am Briefing: Heavy snowfall brings disruption to Capital

SNOW has brought disruption to the Capital with schools closed right across the Lothians and gritters struggling to keep even the main roads cleared.

There are no official road closures in the region this morning but police are warning motorists to only travel if absolutely necessary. Edinburgh airport is closed.

More snow is forecast for this afternoon and the coming days.

• A man has died in a fire in a flat in Slateford.

Firefighters were called to the ground-floor property at Hutchison Cottages in Slateford Road around 2.10am but the elderly man was found dead in his living room. Fire investigators and police are looking into the cause of the fire.

• POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 21-year-old man was left with serious head injuries after an unprovoked attack in the street.

Two men kicked and stamped on the man's head during the assault outside the Save the Children shop on South Bridge.

The attack took place at around 2.30am on Sunday morning.
